O[yes] received 27 video entries in its 2011 high school video contest. Out of these, 10 finalists and one honorable mention were selected to be shown at the video screening on April 2, 2011 at Northern Lights Theater in Salem. (See photos below.)

Four Lake Oswego High School students took home first-place honors and $500 in the 2011 O[yes] video contest, with a matching cash prize for their high school. Piers Dennis, Derek Sturman, Owen Madin, and Devin White created the 45-second video titled Texting and Driving.

The other winners are as follows:

Second place ($400): Drew Corrigan, Sam Calarco Sisters High School, Sisters “Save a Friend. Work Safe.”
Third place ($300): Zack Farrell, Zach Colton Summit High School, Bend “Death Drive”

The creators of the top videos were presented their awards Saturday during a special screening at the Northern Lights Theatre in Salem. The contest was designed to increase awareness about safety for young people, with the theme of “Save a Friend. Work Safe.” Students were asked to create a video with a teen job safety and health message using the concept of, “Speak Up!” as the main focus of the video. The videos were judged on creativity, production value, youth appeal, and the overall safety and health message. See all of the top videos.

The other finalists are as follows: “Lower the Lift” – Springfield High School, “Save a Life, Don't Throw a Knife” – Elgin High School, “Texting and Band Saws Don't Mix” –  Summit High School, “Safety on the job” - Glencoe High School, “Texting and Driving PSA” – Parkrose High School, “You Wanna See Unsafe” – Springfield High School, “Pay Attention in the Kitchen” - Crescent Valley High School
Honorable Mention: “Speak Up!” – Waldport High School

O[yes] is impressed with the quality of the videos submitted this year, and the messages shared by these young people. We will share these videos throughout the next year during our education events, workshops and exhibits. We look forward to seeing what is ahead of us in the 2012 contest! Information will be released in September, 2012.

The winning videos addressed health and safety issues such as pranks on the job, training and ergonomics.
